Dave “Otto” Oettinger

Otto is a perennial Goleta boy and proud of it.
Known by many as the leader of long time local band, 20 Foot Faces, he’s now
married and a father. He still finds time to rock and surf, and that can’t be bad!

We doubt if anything under the tree made Dave as happy as this ride.

In 1976, Dave and his buddy Paul Shields rode their bikes down to Sands for Dave’s
first surf session ever. It was so big, he couldn’t get out, but he did get the stoke,
and that was the start of a life long passion.

Comfortable backside, 1989
This is Jalama on a winter afternoon. Dave used to hang out up there in the dirt parking
lot in his ’64 Chevy Malibu, and often he would have the whole place to himself.

This is Pasquali’s on mainland Mexico, 1989.
Otto broke two boards in two days. Kinda sucks when you’re there for a week…
He spent the rest of the week mooching boards. ” No way dude, you break way too many boards….”

Same trip in Mex.
Dave says he was in this barrel for about 4 seconds.
His buddy, Terry “Burrhead” Fransen, took it from the beach because they had to share a board.
They both broke way too many boards…

Actually, it was a blessing they broke their boards, because if they were both surfing, they
wouldn’t have gotten pictures like this! That is a freight train…

Thirty years later, Dave’s still got the stoke. A regular on the beaches of Goleta,
if there’s a swell, he’ll find a way to get some.
Rock on Dave!

More recently, Dave took his boy, Trace, to meet the surf legends Sean Thomson and
Mark Richards at the premier of their movie. Trace was less than thrilled, plus he was
sporting a diaper full of lovin’ for all to enjoy. Didn’t seem to be bothering the legends!
