Doug under the umbrella 705x508 1

Doug Yartz is living the surfer’s dream. Growing up in Goleta, he was either in the water or cruising around town on his skateboard. When he had to get a job, he got one at a surf shop, Surf Country in Goleta. Now he owns it, and is still a regular fixture in the lineup at Campus Point.

When he’s in the water, he’s not only having fun, he’s also thinking about his next board design. Doug has created several cutting edge shapes that he rides regularly and he sells them in his shop.
We asked Doug if he had any old photos we could post and he gave us the following……

Here’s Doug with an early version of “The Grouper”, an innovative shape he now sells in Surf Country. He’s also sporting an innovative hairstyle.

Big winter swell showing south of the Goleta pier. You don’t see that too often.
Doug said a friend of his surfed this but he passed. We don’t blame him, that’s
about where the sewer lets out isn’t it?

Campus Point, during construction of the newer pipeline into the UCSB lagoon.

Okay, this is our favorite. Is that a tank in the old Haskells parking lot? We wish we were driving that baby, we would have taken it to the valet parking.
And what’s that guy doing in front of it? Looks like a scene from Bejing!
Remember that parking lot? Those were the days…..

Sure, he’s on a sponge, but it’s a pretty picture anyway.
Anonymous about to be consumed by the infamous Refugio shore pound.

Unidentified surfer and spot. Bitchen wave, we think it’s way outside the rocks at Campus Point. Isn’t that Isla Vista in the distance?

A true Goleta classic.  This picture was all the rage when it came out. It was even
published in Surfer Magazine, which caused some controversy. The spot is El Cap. The surfer is Jeff Jasiorkowski and that’s his dog in the foreground, waiting patiently. We don’t know who took the picture, but it’s hanging in Surf Country today.

Mr. Yartz himself, hanging everything off the front in a contest
at Ledbetter in 2001.

Thanks Doug, for sharing some old photos. Go visit him at Surf Country Surf Shop on Fairview in Goleta. The only real surf shop in town!
