Normally, I take all the photos you see on Goleta Surfing.com myself.
But this winter, we’ve had so much great surf,
we thought it might be fun to see how it looked through another’s lens.
So we asked a few local photographers to share some of their shots from January 2016.
Enjoy-
Tom Poss
Tom Poss moved here in 1997 from Minnesota.
He enjoys photographing surfers and their culture.
Poss started taking photos in the late 1980’s,
but he really got the bug with the advent of digital cameras.
Today he shoots with a Nikon D800 camera.
For the most part, Tom enjoys landscape photography. He’s made a nice little side-business for
himself photographing vineyards and wine related subjects and then selling his work at wineries.
His day job is as a marketing director for a medical device company in Goleta.
Tom did a great job of capturing the semi hectic environment in January.

James Fortman
James Fortman has lived in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area his whole life.
James is not just a great photographer, he’s an excellent surfer.
In fact we’ve posted photos of him surfing on this website in the past.
He remembers shooting his first roll of film at La Purisma mission when he was 6 years old.
He got really into photography in the 7th grade and has been shooting the 25 years since.
James uses a Canon 50d, a Tamron 100-600 telephoto, a 10-17 Tokina fisheye
and a SPL waterhousing.
Surf photography is just a hobby for him, and he likes to shoot whoever is surfing and having fun.
Joseph Yee
Joseph Yee has lived in Goleta his whole life, born and raised here.
He got hooked on photography after a class he took during his junior year in high school
and he’s been taking a lot of photos ever since, about 5 or 6 years now.
His favorite subjects to shoot are people in their element and the ocean.
A lot of the time, those people happen to be his friends, like Vinny Leonelli and Sam Harden.
And those friends happen to be a couple of the best young surfers Goleta has to offer.
Joseph uses a Canon 6d with a 28mm and a 50mm lens and a SPL water housing.
Right now photography is just a hobby for Joseph, but he’s thinking of doing it professionally.
Taking photos could become a career for him in the future.
Judging by these few photos he shared with us,
we believe a professional career is very possible.

Tony Modugno
The name sounds familiar, because he’s my son.
Tony usually shoots video, but he occasionally takes surf photos as well.
This day in January he went to a non spot that was breaking nicely with just a few friends,
Carlos Castro, Kyle Hoffman and Daniel Prichard.
He stoked his buddies out with some clean shots of them enjoying the moment.
Tony’s a Goleta native, born and raised, and he’s made wedding photography his occupation,
but when the surf is pumping, who can resist…..
He uses a Canon 6d, and a variety of lenses.
This was one of those days that Goleta Beach became a surf spot.
In fact, a surprisingly heavy surf spot on the sets…
Some guys were surfing from Campus all the way down to Goleta Beach.
Which was where a lot of them had parked anyway, due to the crowds…
Check out some of Tony’s videos
Thanks for sharing guys, and keep your batteries charged……
more surf’s coming.
