Hairy Sunday
Everybody knew it was coming. It was supposed to be real big, real stormy and real westerly.
Oh yeah, and on Monday.
Sunday afternoon, we wandered down to Goleta beach to see if there were any signs of the
incoming bombs. We were a little late, they came a little early.
They had just reopened Goleta pier and we watched a set break outside of the pier!
The parking lot was littered with seaweed and driftwood.
We decided to get up to the point, asap.
The peanut gallery on top of the point was ooing and awing as we approached.
And this was why….
It was big and not so pretty.
The biggest sets were breaking backside of Campus, and mostly went unridden.
While the crowd up top was thin, lots of waves were caught.
Of course, everyone told me it was bigger earlier, they always do.
They also told me it was stormier earlier and as sunset approached,
the winds calmed down.
Still, some interesting wobbles popped up here and there.
Didn’t bother this guy though.
This sequence is of Wayne Rich.
He rode this beauty to the beach on a nice little baby blue gun.
Wonder who shaped it for him….
Hope he enjoyed this moment while it lasted.
Check out this guys rail, buried and burning down the line.
Same wave: bet this guy’s still talking about this one.
Time to fly away home.
So it was on February 24th, 2008 in Goleta.
Just another extraordinary day the good land.
Lots of friends have sent us photos from other areas on Sunday.
Check these out.
Carpinteria.
World’s safest beach; from Dave Powdrell.
Santa Barbara breakwater from Mark Morey.
Actually, it didn’t break water, the water broke it!
Dave Chancey sent us these two shots of Campus earlier in the day.
Jim Goodland sent us this sweet shot from down Ventura way.
Lines as far as the eye can see.
Goleta surfer Murph O’Dean sent us these shots of Campus
and Goleta Beach.
The waves are breaking outside of the pier! Not normal.
More Murf shots.
