New Years Swell
2008
January 5th and 6th rang in the new year with a thump. A powerful storm brought Goleta
lots of mellow rain and surprisingly clean lines.
The creeks swelled up and dumped into the ocean, but the “nutrient” rich water
didn’t keep the surf hungry locals from getting in it.
El Cap had a small, happy crowd Saturday morning.
Later in the day we ended up at Campus Point where
we were greeted by an unusual site.
Nobody knew how this boat ended up on the rocks, but
everybody enjoyed climbing on it and hanging out.
Anyways, the Point was firing!
Not too crowded and plenty of waves for everyone.
Even though this swell was predicted well in advance, the crowds were
manageable. Our guess it was all the media reports about staying out
of the runoff from a big rain. Especially the first big rain in a year.
Hepatitis shmepatitas, it was going off!
Demi Boelsterli was there and she caught plenty of nice waves.
Guys were throwing themselves at her;
at least this guy did.
Another stoked local, Clay, showed up and managed to snag most of the
best waves of the session.
Goleta legend, Randall Rostoker showed up and
took his pick of the set waves.
I don’t know, you think he’s having any fun?
Professional photographer Glen Dubock was on hand, which
added to the excitement of the day. He may have it camouflaged,
but you still can’t miss a lens like that!
Surf Country’s Doug Yartz came down just as we were taking off.
He brought out his brand new Monarch surfboard that Tyler Anderson
just made for him. It’s almost too pretty to put wax on.
Almost.
All in all, a great weekend of surf in beautiful Goleta, California.
Hopefully the beginning of a pumping new year!
