Red Tide?

For most of the month of July, 2008, the water at Haskells has
been a brackish brown and the waves have created a thick foam
that hangs on what little sand exists on the beach.

Goleta Surfing hasn’t actually asked a marine biologist, (that would be too
much like work),  but we think this is a red tide.
wikipedia / Red tide  A few summers ago we experienced a red tide, and it looked like this.
Basically, it’s caused by a plankton bloom.

We may be wrong. In fact, most folks think it’s just mud. But it hasn’t
rained in months and none of the creeks are even spilling into the ocean.
Another theory is a landslide up the coast, but it’s been brown for weeks.
And what about all the foam?

It can’t be good for business at the Bacara, if anyone cares.

Whatever the cause, it doesn’t mean you can’t surf in it; but we suggest
you keep your mouth closed.

So that’s what Bobby Morris and Vinnie Leonelli did.

Vinnie’s become a regular at Haskells, following Bobby out into any surf that’s
available. In fact, he went with Morris up to an Esteem contest at Pismo Beach
recently and they both took first place in their divisions!
They’re doing a fine job of representing Goleta.

Hope they kept their mouths shut….
