Summer’s End

After a long, flat summer, Goleta finally got some.
The timing couldn’t have been better, with the swell hitting the beach, not only on the
weekend, but on one of the warmest weekends of the year.

We started the day up on the Gaviota Coast, with a survey of the situation.
The forecast called for it to build throughout the day, and they were right.

Early morning had some small, clean sets, with long intervals.

That was all Bobby Morris and Vinny Leonelli needed to have some good, clean, fun.

It was a perfect Saturday morning, and these guys managed to get it all to
themselves; besides a few natives cruising through every now and again.

Later in the day, we headed over to everybody’s favorite point and, by coincidence,
everybody was there!
But on a hot Saturday with waves, you were crazy not to be at the beach.

Actually, the crowd wasn’t that bad…..
And the water temp was very comfortable.

One of the things we love about photographing Sands is the guys that
surf there aren’t afraid to try it; it being pretty much anything!
Keeps things exciting.

This guy’s not afraid to try it, and he very often lands it.
Ian Jenkins enjoying himself.

!!!!!!!!!

And still hangs on to his board!

As the afternoon passed, the size increased and the glassy conditions
remained, making for some classic Sands.

This guy did a fine job of avoiding all the obstacles.

Ian Jenkins again, shredding.

Reluctantly, we had to head home, but it only got better after we left.

By Sunday the size had decreased, but there were still waves.
And it was another scorcher.

And by late afternoon, a little cheese wind had kicked up, making things a
little uglier, but still surfable, for sure.

The highlight of this afternoon was when Demi Boelsterli showed up with
an alaia under one of her arms.

It was a beautiful piece of wood, but really small.
I think we have cutting boards in our kitchen bigger than this!
But guess what….

Demi made it look like a surfboard, despite the less than ideal conditions.
Pretty amazing.

And as Monday rolled in, the waves rolled out, making it a
perfect weekend for all the weekend warriors.

And with Summer’s end comes Fall, and with Fall comes more surf, we hope….
